Browning and Cunningham Family Dentistry can safely use nitrous oxide to control our patients’ pain and anxiety during certain dental procedures.
Nitrous oxide is an effective and safe method of sedation that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a nasal mask. Sometimes called “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide may help make you more comfortable during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide will not induce unconsciousness, and you will still be able to cough and swallow as needed. You will also be able to hear and respond to the dentist.
After breathing normally through the nasal mask, you should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide within a few minutes. You may begin to feel light-headed and a tingly sensation in your arms and legs, and ultimately, calm and comfortable.
Recovery from nitrous oxide sedation is quick, as the gas will be flushed from your system with oxygen.
Talk to your dentist about whether nitrous oxide would be a good option for your dental procedure.
